Benefits of Being an Active HS Alumnus/Alumna [Infographic]
Many people acknowledge their high school life as the best part of their lives. Why wouldn’t it be? These are the years we meet our friends, formed bonds over field trips, lunch breaks, and terror professors. Indeed, these people are likely to become the friends we will keep for the rest of our lives. High school was the time when we established your roots, discovered your personality—likes, dislikes, passions, etc. It is the part of your life where you’ve had realizations of where you want to be in the next 10 years, of who will you become in the future.
Although the time of running around high school hallways, gossiping in the cafeteria, and cramming for projects are over, there are ways you can cherish the memories—one is by being an active alumnus or alumnae.
Here are the benefits of actively participating in your school’s alumni association:
- It’s fun.
Who wouldn’t want to have a concrete reason to meet up with your old friends? Being active in events organized by the alumni committee is one way of catching up with each and every one of your batch mate’s life and welfare. Have you met their spouses? Their children? Attending reunions and other alumni activities are a good way of socialization, and distressing.
Did you know that socializing with your friends is one way of relieving stress? You can talk about childhood memories, milestones, and long-forgotten stories about anything under the sun. So, go ahead and have fun with your oldest buddies and create new memories.
- Reconnect and build a bigger network.
Aside from reconnecting with your old pals, being active in alumni events and programs can also mean a bigger network for you, hence, wider connections and opportunities. You’ll never know who will you meet, or who will you have the chance to be friends with.
- It promotes camaraderie.
Participating in games, sports activities, and out of town trips with your alumni friends can also further intensify your relationship with them. Now that you are all grown-ups, with different sets of personalities, skills, and characters, it will be interesting to find out how old friends are still compatible with each other, or not. Will previous rivals still be each others’ competitors? Will old friends stay friends after a competition?
Of course, the goal of a reunion is to promote a more harmonious relationship between batch mates, which can be forgotten because of busy calendars and conflicting schedules.
- It helps not to forget our roots and uphold your heritage.
More than looking back, being an active part of the alumni of your school is one great reminder of your roots, your past, and your heritage. More often than not, your high school is located in your hometown. Probably, some of your batch mates have been living abroad, or outside the city or province. Maybe you, yourself have not been in your town for a few years now.
Being an active alumnus or alumni allows you to look back to your roots, the places that formed your character, and molded the way you think. Attending events, activities, especially high school reunions will further strengthen your foundations and roots as a person. What makes it more special is you rediscover your past with your closest friends.
- It encourages charitable works for a cause.
More than reminiscing the good times, attending reunions can also be a venue to help those in need. Although it may not be one of your batch mates, you can organize a drive, an outreach program, or a benefit event for the poor with them, which further creates a camaraderie, teamwork, and stronger friendship.
